The Project: At Buffalo Videography, we don’t just capture stunning aerial views; we ensure every flight is executed with precision, safety, and full compliance with the strictest FAA regulations. Over the years, we’ve successfully completed thousands of drone flights across the country, navigating some of the most complex airspaces. One of our latest exciting projects took place at Highmark Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills, during the National Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival.
Flying drones at NFL stadiums is no simple task. It requires detailed planning, seamless communication, and approvals from multiple stakeholders. However, our experience working with major networks like Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and various NFL franchises equipped us to handle the challenges smoothly.
Preparation: Permission and Protocols
When flying in NFL venues, the first step is
obtaining the necessary permissions. Here’s what we needed to secure before launching our drones over Highmark Stadium:
1. $5 Million Liability Insurance: Large-scale events such as the Wing Festival require comprehensive insurance coverage. This high limit ensures coverage for any risks or unforeseen circumstances.
2. FAA Authorization: Obtaining FAA clearance is essential, particularly when flying over large crowds. For this event, we were authorized under the FAA’s Part 107 regulations, which allows drone operators to fly commercially. We also had to secure a special waiver permitting us to fly over the assembled people safely.
3. Approvals from the Buffalo Bills Organization, State, County, and Stadium: NFL stadiums have strict protocols in place. Along with team and local government approvals, we had to coordinate with the stadium’s construction team, given any ongoing work in the vicinity.
Without these permissions, unauthorized drone operators face swift action. NFL stadiums now utilize advanced drone tracking systems to monitor and protect the airspace. These systems can detect and even disable unauthorized drones, ensuring that only approved operators are in the air. The NFL has implemented these systems across multiple venues to safeguard fans, players, and event staff before, during, and after games and events.
Flying with the Buffalo Bills: A Unique Experience
Our recent work at Highmark Stadium and our drone experience with the Buffalo Bills, has involved capturing stunning aerial video for marketing and broadcast, this time, during the National Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival. Flying over the stadium at dusk (during civil twilight for you pilots), we captured the vibrant energy of the festival and the iconic backdrop of Buffalo’s beloved football field. The experience was special, not only because of the event but also because of the precision and collaboration it required.
We maintained close communication with stadium security throughout the event to ensure everything ran smoothly. As drone operators, we’re responsible not only for capturing footage but also for maintaining a safe environment. That’s why we go above and beyond by staying in constant contact with both NFL and local officials, making sure every flight is safe and approved.
Why Expertise Matters in NFL Stadiums
Flying at high-profile venues like NFL stadiums comes with heightened responsibility. NFL franchises have implemented drone defense systems that can track, intercept, and even disable rogue drones. These systems ensure that only authorized drones are allowed in the airspace, protecting fans and players alike. For drone operators like us, staying ahead of these technologies and understanding how to work within these restrictions is key to maintaining long-term relationships with the NFL.
This is where our extensive experience in managing complex, high-stakes environments shines. Our team’s ability to handle regulatory requirements, communicate effectively, and execute the technical demands of each project sets us apart in the drone industry.
Bringing Buffalo to New Heights
Whether it’s filming at NFL stadiums, working for Fox Sports, or covering major events like the Wing Festival, our mission at Buffalo Videography is to utilize aerial footage to reveal more than what meets the eye from the ground. The content we capture helps tell the story of Buffalo’s energy, passion, and community spirit.
We’re excited to share the highlights from this project, which perfectly blend the excitement of Buffalo’s beloved chicken wing festival with the backdrop of Bills Mafia territory. This project was a reminder of the thrill that comes with flying in such iconic locations, and we’re proud to bring this moment these moments to life for Buffalo fans.
